Cycling in Ethiopia The Road to Lalibela by Matthew Kadey
We spent
all morning cycling the thirty kilometer climb out of the hundred
degree valley onto the noticeably cooler plateau in the Ethiopian
highlands. A reasonable feat, but really nothing compared to what
people here endure every day. Go out on the street in any North
American or European city and ask people what comes to mind when
someone says Ethiopia and, whether you want to blame the media, Live
Aid or a little bit of our own ignorance, the belief that Ethiopia
symbolizes children starving to death while flies eat away at their
wounds, and tribes performing weird and archaic rituals, is all too
common. While some of this does take place (minus the tribes cooking
up a pot of people stew), Ethiopia is much more, and presents any
open-minded traveler with a wealth of opportunities to experience
what rural Africa is really about - colorful, vibrant people who are
struggling to find their way in a world that has largely forgotten
that they're even there. And for a cyclist it's the ultimate in fat
tire adventure.
As a photographer and freelance writer I decided to join Off Beat
Roads on their 700 kilometer mountain bike trip from Addis Ababa -
Ethiopia's bustling capital and the historic town of Lalibela,
beautifully situated in the highlands. Within the first couple days
of our bike trip, it quickly became apparent that us
faranji's (Ethiopian for foreigner) were going to be the
center of attention everywhere we went. The fascination in
everything we did from setting up our tents to loading a new camera
memory card was remarkable as was the stunning mountain scenery, the
elderly ladies walking barefoot with an ample load of firewood on
their backs, the beautifully dressed and yet very camera-shy Ormou,
Afar and Amhara tribal women; and immense friendliness among the
population despite various hardships. In fact, I can't ever remember
felling safer on a bike trip.
Lalibela contains such an impressive array of rock- hewn churches
that it has been dubbed "Africa's Petra." Most remarkable are not
the churches that are carved into the rock, but those chiseled
completely away from it, leaving all four sides visible. By far, the
most impressive in this category is the church of Bet Giyorgis -
known commonly as St. George church. Carved out of volcanic rock
with such immaculate detail, I felt compelled to spend a few hours
soaking in its stunning setting before even entering.
I would highly recommend a bicycling trip to Ethiopia if you are
looking for a truly exceptional bicycle adventure and wishing to
experience rural Africa up- close and personal.
If you go Off
Beat Roads is the only cycling company to offer bicycle trips to

Interplanetary Bike Ride Saturday, August 12- 13, 2006
We all know that
cycling is a great way to keep in shape and stay healthy and active,
but did you know that participation in the annual Interplanetary
Bicycle Ride may actually reverse the aging process? Since ride
speeds will be in excess of the speed of light (186,000 miles per
second), there are relativistic implications. Some observers predict
that participants will return younger than when they started.
Of course, such figures have been altered to reflect the scale of
the ride's theme: Lakeview Museum's Community Solar System - the
world's largest scale model of the solar system - which extends over
60 miles of central Illinois. Therefore, the rider who completes the
100-mile round trip between Dunlap to Kewanee can claim that she has
ridden 12.5 billion miles on the model, from Saturn to Pluto and
back. Those participants who don't wish to tackle the century ride
can choose to visit as many or as few of the planets as they care
to.
Besides the snacks and goodies you'll find at most rides, the
Interplanetary also offers participants free admission to Lakeview
Museum and its planetarium, as well as an exclusive "star party" at
the Peoria Astronomical Society's Northmoor Observatory on Saturday
night.
The 2006 ride will be held August 12-13, 2006. The
registration fee for a single rider for both days is $20 To sign up,
visit www.lakeview-museum.org.

Eclectic Folk-Pop Duo will Travel from Los Angeles to New
York City by Bicycle For a band that has engaged
shadow puppets, interpretive dance, sword fighting, and jugglers to
charm their audiences, it's not surprising that the Los Angeles
folk-pop duo The Ditty Bops would choose an unorthodox method to
promote their upcoming album Moon Over the Freeway.
On May 25th, the girls - Amanda Barrett and Abby DeWald - will
hit the road for a three-month tour, traveling cross-country from
Los Angeles to New York City solely by bicycle. Along the way, these
bike enthusiasts will stop in both big cities and small towns, and
perform at theaters, music halls, bike stores, and farms to promote
their new release.
The Ditty Bops are working in conjunction with two non-profit
bicycle organizations: Pedals for Progress - shipping
recycled bikes to developing nations and Adventure Cycling -
inspiring people of all ages to travel by bicycle.
Visit the duo's website www.dittybops.com
to donate to these non- profits and to get day-to-day information on
their journey.
